The White Truffle area of Mugello is an area with a strong vocation for truffle production and probably has the oldest truffle hunting and eating tradition in Tuscany, in fact as early as 1857 in the “Giornale agrario Toscano” there are hints of the truffle practice of that time.
“In the Mugello area,” says Simone Calugi of Selektia Tartufi, “a considerable variety of truffles are gathered, but the most popular and appreciated on tables all over the world are the Precious White Truffle and the Summer Black Truffle. For a truffle hunter, Mugello is definitely a place to visit and get to know because it is a magnificent and peculiarly rich area of Tuscany: the municipalities in the Mugello white Tuscan truffle production area are Barberino di Mugello, Borgo San Lorenzo, Firenzuola, Marradi, Palazzuolo sul Senio, San Piero a Sieve, Scarperia and Vicchio.”
The Mugello Truffle Zone
Most of the truffle grounds where white truffles can be found are located on the Mugello valley floor, along the streams that run through it, but especially along the Sieve River and its left-hand tributaries, which flow in a north-south direction. A perfect balance between symbiotic plants, soil and climate is established along the streams, which favors the growth and fruiting of truffles. In particular, erosion of the streams at the expense of existing terraces has created steep and impervious terrain suitable for truffle fruiting. The vegetation of the valley floor consists of plants of Oaks, Poplars, Maples, Elms and shrubs of Hawthorn, Bramble, Sanguinello.
